Here are 7 Things I Want You to Know as an Auckland Newborn Photographer

I’ve been an Auckland Newborn Photographer for over 10 years, and during that time, there have been so many things I wish I could’ve shared with clients, friends, and family. So, instead of trying to explain it all in passing, I’ve put it down here for you. Hopefully, it gives you a little insight into what it’s like to work with me and helps you feel more prepared for your own newborn photo session.

I don’t get grossed out (or offended) easily.

I’ve been working with newborns for years, and let me tell you—I’ve seen it all. If your baby decides to have a little accident on a blanket or spits up all over their carefully chosen outfit, please don’t stress. It’s completely normal! I’m well-prepared for these moments with extra blankets and wipes. In fact, I often expect it. These little hiccups are just part of the fun when working with babies, and they never bother me. Trust me, I’ve got this

You are beautiful.

Whether you’re rocking a fresh blow-dry or showing up in your comfy clothes with bags under your eyes, you’re absolutely beautiful. I know it can be hard to see yourself that way, especially in those early, sleep-deprived days, but the love you have for your little one shines through. That’s what I see through my lens—your connection, your strength, your tenderness.

Years from now, you’ll look back at these photos and be so glad you captured this season of life, even if you didn’t feel like your best self at the time. Trust me, you’re more radiant than you realise – and remember they will never be this small or fit the same way in your arms ever again.

Just because we’re friends doesn’t mean you have to hire me.

There are so many talented photographers out there, and every single one of us has a different style, approach, and personality. If you’re looking for someone to capture your family’s special moments, it’s important to find the photographer who feels like the right fit for you.

If that’s not me, that’s okay! Honestly, no hard feelings at all. I’ll still be here cheering you on and supporting your family’s journey. But if you do decide to work with me, just know that I’ll be over the moon to help you create these memories.

It’s okay to suggest ideas.

Have you spotted a pose or setup on Pinterest that you love? Share it with me! I’m always open to hearing your ideas and figuring out how we can make them work.

Of course, there are always variables to consider—like safety, your baby’s comfort, and what we have available—but we can often create something just as beautiful and meaningful. Your session is all about capturing moments that feel authentic to you and your family, so don’t hesitate to speak up!

You can support my business without hiring me.

Not ready to book a session just yet? That’s totally fine. There are still plenty of ways you can support my business if you’d like to help out. Sharing my posts on social media, leaving a little comment, or tagging a friend who might be interested in a newborn session makes a huge difference. Social media is such a powerful tool for small businesses like mine, and every bit of engagement helps me connect with more families. Honestly, it’s like giving me a big virtual hug—and who doesn’t love a good hug?

I can’t fix everything with Photoshop.

I know it’s tempting to assume that Photoshop can handle anything, but it’s not quite that simple. Yes, I can make minor adjustments and enhancements to ensure your photos look polished, but my goal is always to keep things natural and true to the moment. That means some things, like flaky skin, or birth marks, are best left as they are. Major edits can be done, but they do take extra time and may come with an additional fee.

The beauty of newborn photography lies in its authenticity, so I focus on capturing those genuine, heartfelt moments just as they are.

This is my job.

Being a newborn photographer is truly the best job in the world. I get to spend my days snuggling tiny babies and creating memories that families will treasure forever. But it’s also a business, and there’s a lot that happens behind the scenes.

From editing photos to updating my website, attending workshops, and learning new techniques, there’s always something to do. Running a photography business is more than just

snapping pictures—it’s a full-time commitment. There are also costs that go into running my business, whether I’ve got a session booked or not. Things like insurance, website hosting, equipment maintenance, and software subscriptions are all part of the puzzle, and they’re non-negotiable expenses.

When you book with me, I like to go the extra mile to make your experience special. For example, I provide online photo albums that never expire, so you’ll always have a safe backup of your beautiful photos. It’s my way of making sure you’ll have access to these precious memories for as long as possible.

And while it can be hard work, it’s also my passion, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Bonus Tip: Your baby’s comfort is my top priority.

During your newborn session, I want you to feel completely at ease. That starts with making sure your little one is safe, comfortable, and happy. Over the years, I’ve completed extensive training in newborn safety to ensure I’m handling your precious baby with the utmost care. It’s so important to check that your photographer has experience and training in working with newborns before entrusting them with your little one.

I’ll work around your baby’s needs, whether that means taking breaks for feeding, soothing, or simply giving them a little cuddle. These sessions aren’t rushed; they’re all about creating a calm, relaxed environment so we can capture those sweet, peaceful moments.
